Assisi
The irony of Assisi is it has been made rich by St. Francis, the apostle of poverty. The town is built on the side of Mount Subasio – an impressive position which can be seen from miles around. The Basilica of St. Francis is full of spectacular frescoes by the greatest painters of late medieval Italy. Other highlights are the Basilica of St. Claire (Santa Chiara), and St. Francis's retreat: the Eremo delle Carceri. This is the first stop on a journey over Mount Subasio to Spello. This is recommended for amazing views of Umbria – but some of the road is unsurfaced.
Perugia
Perugia is very much the regional capital, and is home to one of the largest state universities in Italy. It has a real sense of style, and a drink on the main street – Corso Vanucci, is a must to soak up the atmosphere and watch the world go by. The town is home to Umbria Jazz (held annually in July), Umbria’s foremost music event. In terms of sights, Perugia has many Etruscan remains and medieval buildings. Highlights include the Palazzo Priori, home to the Galleria Nazionale, and the Perugino painted Collegio del Cambio

Orvieto
Orvieto is a town so ancient that its early history is uncertain. Its location is remarkable: built on a huge outcrop of volcanic tufa, riddled with hundreds of caves, wells and tunnels of every period from Etruscan to medieval to 17th Century. The Duomo is a masterpiece of Italian Gothic art.
Todi
Todi was founded by the Umbrians but came under the influence of Rome between the 5th and 4th century BC with the name of Tutere. One of the main sights is the Palazzo dei Priori, situated in this central Piazza. Built at the end of the 13th century, it eventually became the headquarters of the Papal governor of the city. As well as hosting a major antique fair – the Rassegna Antiquaria d’Italia, for some years now Todi has been organising the Todifestival in August-September, featuring international standard ballet, music, cinema and theatre.
Spoleto
The city was known for its magnificence as early as 100BC and its early fortunes followed those of the Roman Empire. As well as boasting a startling array of architecture and art, the name of Spoleto has travelled the world also on account of the Two Worlds Festival founded here in 1957 by the composer Giancarlo Menotti. The festival runs every year from the end of June into early July and remains one of Italy’s most prestigious events of its kind, featuring music, opera, ballet, theatre and the visual arts.
Gubbio
The town is home to a fascinating annual event in May - the Ceri Race. Every citizen of Gubbio, whether they live here or not, is involved in this unique event, which is also a popular attraction for thousands of visitors from all over Italy. Considerable skill and strength are necessary to carry the Ceri, huge wooden structures which each weigh around 400 kg and are particularly liable to topple over on account of their height. The race runs through a series of narrow, curvy Medieval streets up a 300 metre high slope. Frequent changes are necessary along the way to substitute tired Ceri bearers with fresh strength. The race progresses up Via Sant'Ubaldo from the small square opposite the duomo, up the slopes of Monte Ingino to the basilica of Sant'Ubaldo at 827 metres above sea level.
TERNI and The Cascata delle Marmore Waterfalls
Terni. – a large town with plenty to see and do. Terni has its own Jazz Festival “Terni Jazz” which opens in June. Now in its 7th edition, the festival takes place in venues across town with a host of leading international names on the jazz scene. The Cascata delle Marmore (7 kilometres from Terni along the SS. 209 Valnerina) is in an exceptionally beautiful natural setting. The waterfalls are in fact artificial, created by the Romans, and operate to a timetable – so check in advance when it is best to visit.
Castiglione del Lago
The most important village on Lake Trasimeno. From the promontory of its castles to the west, it has dominated the lake from the Middle Ages. Around 1500 it became the dukedome of the Corgna family that commissioned the present Town Hall with several interesting 16th century mythological frescoes
Passignano
A city-castle situated on a rocky promontory on the north side of lake Trasimeno. These days only the triangular tower (Clock Tower) and some long stretches of the wall remain. The church of St. Christopher contains a circle of frescoes of great interest by several artists between the 11th and 14th century.
Citta di Castello
Founded by the Umbrians on the valley of the river Tiber, this was invaded by the Barbarians and then reconstructed under the name of Civita Castelli. The Museum of Umbrian Tradition is worth a visit with its artisan works, fabrics, tools and ceramics.
Norcia
This town has an amazing location beneath the heart of National Park of Monti Sibillini. Norcia is famous for its traditional food (sausages, black truffles, various kinds of cheese, and lentils), ingredients that are often the base of Umbrian meals. To see: St. Benedict’s Church, Castle (La Castellina) which houses the Civic Museum, Town Hall with fourteenth-century Portico, Loggia, Steps and Bell-Tower, Cathedral of S. Maria Argentea, St. Agostino Church, Shrine or Temple, S. Agostinuccio’s Oratory
Other towns and villages of interest include:
Citta Della Pieve, Bevagna, Montefalco, Spello, Deruta, Montecastello di Vibio, Cascia, Paciano, Panicale, Narni, Umbertide, Corciano, Trevi
